Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the surface roughness characteristics of En31 alloy steel during machining operations using various inserts under both dry and wet cutting conditions. The research adopts a systematic approach, employing a lathe machine for turning operations and varying cutting parameters to explore the effects of insert type and cutting environment on surface roughness. Experimental trials are conducted under dry and wet cutting conditions, with surface roughness measurements taken using appropriate metrology tools. The CNMG120404EM6630 and CNMG120408EM6630 inserts are chosen for their suitability in machining En31 alloy steel, and their performance is evaluated regarding surface finish quality. The choice of cutting environment significantly influences surface roughness outcomes, with wet cutting environments generally yielding smoother surface finishes compared to dry cutting conditions. Comparison of the surface roughness characteristics (Ra) of En31 alloy steel sunder dry and wet cutting environments were analyzed. Moreover, the selection of insert type demonstrates notable influence on surface roughness, with considerable variations observed between CNMG120404EM6630 and CNMG120408EM6630 inserts.
